Washington, DC November 15, 2020 – The Board of Directors, on behalf of Korean Americans for Political Action, denounced in strongest possible terms the remarks made by former Congressman Jay Kim regarding Marilyn Strickland who won her election to become a Member of Congress, representing Washington State’s 10th District and Andy Kim, who won re-election to represent New Jersey’s 3rd District.

During an SBS News interview about the November elections regarding Congresswoman-elect Strickland and Congressman Kim, Kim said, “The woman does not appear to be 100% Korean and her husband is Black. The other fella, (Congressman Kim) has an Arab wife, adding “I wish they were 100% Korean, a purebred like I am.” (Quoted from Twitter)

The host of the news show, Ju Yeong-jin attempted unsuccessfully to cut Kim off. Ju later apologized and SBS took down the news show episode from the internet.

“It is painfully obvious that these comments are spoken out of ignorance of the realities in the United States where Americans of Korean descent are not solely identified by faces, skin color, or even surnames.

It is regrettable that the former Congressman has shamed himself for embracing and worse yet, giving voice to the very prejudices Americans and Koreans continue to fight against, said John Lim, Chair of the Board of the Directors.

“We would hope that he recognizes that his comments are unacceptable and that he reaches out to directly apologize to Congresswoman-elect Strickland and Congressman Kim as soon as possible,” Lim said.

워싱턴 DC – KAPA를 대변하여 이사진들을 이번 선거에서 당선된 한국계 메릴린 스트릭랜드 워싱턴 10지구 연방 하원의원 당선자과 앤디 김 뉴저지 3지구 연방 하원의원에게 부적절한 인종주의적 발언을 한 김창준 전 연방 하원의원을 강력하게 비판함을 밝힌다.

지난 11/5일 한국 SBS와 인터뷰 중 진행자가 “후배 한인 연방 하원의원들이 탄생했는데 기분이 어떠냐”고 질문하자 김 전 의원은 “한 여자분은 100% 한국사람처럼 보이지 않고 남편이 흑인이며, 또 한 친구(앤디 김)는 부인이 아랍계통이고 애들도 그렇고 한국에서 태어난 것도 아니고” “나와같이 100% 순종이면 (좋겠다)”고 말하여 큰 물의를 일으켰다.

진행자 주영진 앵커는 김 전의원을 적절하게 막지 못한 점을 사과하였으며 SBS는 관련 방송분의 홈페이지, 유투브 다시보기를 중단했다.

존 림 KAPA 이사장은 “한국계 미국인이 성, 피부색등과 같이 외적인 모습으로만 판단하지 않는 작금의 미국 현실과 동 떨어진 시대착오적 발언은 매우 부적절하다. 또한, 김창준 전의원의 이러한 인종주의적 발언은 개인의 부끄러움을 떠나서 우리 한인사회가 뿌리깊은 편견속에서 계속 싸워 나가야 한다는 것을 의미한다” 라고 밝혔으며 “김 전 의원이 공식적으로 사과문을 게시하였지만 메릴린 스트릭랜드 당선자와 앤디 김 의원에게 직접 사과하기를 촉구”하였다.
